Nebbiolo
Under the Stars of Nebbiolo: Our Journey into the History of an Iconic Wine in Turin
Piedmont has always been wine country and in this article, we want to introduce the Nebbiolo, a real jewel of a wine that reflects the character and tradition of the Piedmontese hills.
Nebbiolo: The Essence of Langhe
Nebbiolo is a grape variety that has deep roots in the lands of Langhe, the hilly region that embraces Piedmont. The name, “Nebbiolo”, was coined from the Italian “nebbia” (fog) and refers to the fog which often envelops the vineyard in the hills during the harvest season. This grape variety is the undisputed star of illustrious wines such as Barolo and Barbaresco, which have gained international fame for their elegance and complexity.
A Journey Across Time through Labels
The history of Nebbiolo dates back centuries, when noble families and monks from local monasteries cultivated these vines with passion. The first documented traces of Nebbiolo date back to the 13th century and, since then, its presence in Piedmontese vineyards has continued to grow.
Barolo, one of the most renowned wines produced with Nebbiolo, was, in the 19th century, officially recognised as “the wine of kings and the king of wines”. Its elegance and structure make it an ideal companion for special occasions, whilst Barbaresco, another prestigious wine, offers a more accessible but equally fascinating perspective.
